The cathedral was first built in the 1860's and blown up by Stalin in 1931. A building was planned for the site but was not built due to the war. It was rebuilt in 1995. In 2012, five members of the rock band Pussy Riot staged an uninvited performance in the Cathedral and were arrested and jailed.
